Knock, Knock! How Woodpeckers Bang Their Heads Without Getting Bonked!
Have you ever watched a woodpecker tap-tap-tapping on a tree? RAT-A-TAT-TAT! They hit their beaks against hard wood up to 20 times each second! That’s faster than you can blink your eyes! And they do this ALL DAY LONG.
But guess what? Woodpeckers NEVER get headaches! Isn’t that amazing?
Superpower Skulls!
If you knocked your head against a tree that hard and that fast, you would definitely get a big OUCH! So what’s the woodpecker’s secret?
Woodpeckers have superhero heads with special shock absorbers built right into their skulls! Here’s their awesome equipment:
- Spongy Bone – Around their brain, woodpeckers have a special spongy bone that works like a helmet. It soaks up the banging so their brain stays safe.
- Super-Strong Neck Muscles – These muscles work like bungee cords to control the pecking and absorb shock.
- Special Tongue – A woodpecker’s tongue is super long and wraps all the way around their skull! This helps cushion their brain even more.
- Perfectly-Shaped Beak – Their beaks are designed to direct force away from their brains.
Why All That Pecking?
Woodpeckers aren’t just making noise for fun! They peck for three important reasons:
- To find yummy bugs hiding inside trees for dinner
- To make holes for their nests
- To talk to other woodpeckers (it’s woodpecker texting!)
Try This At Home: The Egg-cellent Helmet Experiment!
Want to see how woodpeckers protect their brains? Let’s try a fun experiment! You’ll need:
- A raw egg (that’s your “brain”)
- A small zip-top plastic bag
- Packing peanuts or cotton balls
- Another bigger zip-top plastic bag
What to do:
- Put your “brain” (the egg) in the small plastic bag and seal it.
- Fill the bigger bag halfway with packing peanuts or cotton balls.
- Place the small bag with the egg inside the bigger bag.
- Add more packing materials around the egg bag until it’s snug.
- Seal the bigger bag.
- Gently shake the big bag. Does your “brain” stay safe?
- Try again with less padding. What happens?
This is how a woodpecker’s special skull keeps its brain safe during all that pecking!
Woodpecker Fun Facts:
- Some woodpeckers peck wood so fast, it sounds like a machine gun!
- The force of a woodpecker’s peck is about 1,000 times the force of gravity!
- That’s like if you ran into a wall at 16 miles per hour… WITH YOUR FACE!
- But thanks to their super shock absorbers, woodpeckers never get dizzy or hurt.
Next time you hear RAT-A-TAT-TAT coming from a tree, look up! You might see a woodpecker using its amazing head to find lunch or build a home. And remember – sometimes having a hard head is actually pretty smart!
Try This Too!
Put your fingers on your temples (the sides of your head) and open and close your mouth. Feel those muscles moving? Woodpeckers have special versions of these muscles that help cushion their brains even more!
What other animals can you think of that have special body parts to protect them?
